Mountain Air offers scenic and luxurious accommodations in a gated mountain community situated atop Slickrock Mountain just 30 minutes north of Asheville. While only residents have access to the Mountain Air Community amenities, there are 6 gorgeous and well-maintained parks and many wonderful hiking and biking trails for guests to enjoy. While each park is unique in its own way, all of them boast stunning views, outdoor seating areas, and cooking facilities for big celebrations or private parties.
Outside the Mountain Air gates, there are even more opportunities to explore and maximize your time in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. From river rafting and tubing to taking a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, stopping occasionally to check out the view at one of the beautiful overlooks, to hiking and ziplining through the Pisgah National Forest to horseback riding and golfing to skiing during the winter months at the Hatley Pointe Ski Resort (formerly Wolf Ridge), there’s no shortage of outdoor adventure perfectly suited for everyone in your group.
Less than 10 minutes from the gate, you’ll find the quaint town of Burnsville. Home to the towering peak of Mt. Mitchell, aka the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River, Burnsville provides residents with access to shopping and dining in a peaceful small-town setting. In fact, downtown Burnsville is one of the closest towns to Mount Mitchell and is the location of the corresponding State Park. In addition to outdoor adventure, the vibrant Burnsville art scene draws in a noteworthy crowd. Catch a play at the historic Parkway Playhouse from April to December, visit the Toe River Arts gallery year-round, or check out the renowned Penland School of Crafts that boasts 400+ acres and 57 buildings, and draws more than 1,400 people each year seeking instruction at this famous establishment. Burnsville is also the epicenter of the Mount Mitchell Crafts Fair which takes place each August and includes work from over 200 juried crafters.
