The quaint town of Burnsville sits at over 2800 feet of elevation and is one of the closest towns to the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, Mt. Mitchell. From Burnsville, Mt Mitchell is accessible via a scenic drive on NC-80 to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and eventually up to Mount Mitchell State Park's 6600+ foot climb.
