Black Bear Summit, formerly known as "Cool View Cabin," has spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Lure, and beyond that will make you stop and pause. This mountaintop log cabin in Gateway Mountain, a 3,000-acre nature preserve, is a wonderful getaway for family and friends yet close to all Western North Carolina attractions and activities. Stay on the mountain and enjoy all that Gateway Mountain has to offer including 2 lakes and a trout pond for catch-and-release fishing (no license required), a beautiful waterfall park, hiking trails, and abundant wildlife.

This lovely cabin has 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms featuring a Jacuzzi tub in one bath and a claw foot soaker tub in the other bath. A wood stove in the living area warms the soul on chilly nights and don't miss the beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the wrap-around deck. After a day of adventure enjoy the 6-person hot tub with the same spectacular views. There is also a fire pit for your enjoyment. Located 10 minutes off of I-40, trips to Black Mountain, Asheville, and the Blue Ridge Parkway are an easy 30-45 minutes; Lake Lure and Chimney Rock - 30 minutes.

While staying at Black Bear Summit, you'll enjoy an extensive selection of books, movies, games, and puzzles. Log into your own streaming accounts on the smart TV or peruse the extensive satellite channel selection. Take advantage of the owner's family's book of personal recommendations for food, drink, hiking, biking, and the area in general. Work remotely if you wish, via the fast wifi and workstation. Local and custom artwork throughout the cabin and a fully-stocked kitchen will make you feel at home.

Main Level: Recently upgraded deck with an incredible view and furniture for dining and lounging; living room with smart TV and wood stove; 6-person dining table; kitchen island with 4 stools; kitchen with gourmet 6-burner gas range and dishwasher; full bath; 2 queen bedrooms.
Upstairs: Primary king bedroom with full bath; loft with remote laptop working station.
Ground level/basement area: washer/dryer and sliding doors leading to the hot tub and fire pit area (guests can bring charcoal and use the cooking grate available at the fire pit).

Please note: This house is pet-friendly with an additional pet fee. Guests are responsible for purchasing their own firewood. While firewood may be present at the cabin and can be utilized if present, it is not guaranteed. During the colder winter months (from December through March), icy and/or snowy road conditions and delayed snow plow operations are possible within the development.

We strongly recommend AWD or 4WD vehicles and travel insurance throughout the year but especially for those staying in the Gateway Mountain development during the winter months. No parking is allowed on roadways or at gate entrances. No RVs, boat trailers, camping trailers, or trailers of any kind are permitted in the Gateway Mountain Community.

The Black Bear Summit is a great cabin. They had everything we needed. A great selection of books and games, all the kitchen supplies and utensils you need. The beds were comfortable and the cabin was exceptionally clean. Unfortunately we had to cut our trip short due to Hurricane Helene, but we plan to come back soon!

I first discovered Black Bear Mountain more than a year ago and made it my goal to book a trip there. We arrived late at night but waking up the next morning assured us that the wait was worth it. The views are never ending. The kitchen was fully stocked, the King bed was extremely comfortable and the house was very clean upon arrival. Everyone I was in communication with from the rental department was super friendly and helpful as well. I cannot wait to make another relaxing getaway trip here soon!

What a great place to spend a family getaway! We really enjoyed the location and the feel of being somewhat “off the grid”. The initial drive up the mountain can cause a little anxiety, especially with 3 daughters, but it gets much easier once done.. The views from the back deck are fantastic! The cabin is very comfortable.. It’s a short drive to Asheville, which we did a couple of times going shopping and to Biltmore. The town of Black Mountain was really nice too. The short trail hike to the local waterfall was well worth it! We were also lucky enough to get a few snow flakes our last night on the mountain! Overall, a great trip!

I have to admit we were all sad to leave this beautiful home! What an absolutely beautiful view! Loved the roominess of the home. There were 5 of us and we all had plenty of space. The thoughtful amenities were great (fans in every room). We have booked many vacations on line over the past ten years or more and this cabin is by far the best place we have ever stayed! Can’t wait to come back! Loved the hot tub with towels! Enjoyed the fire pit! Loved the time we spent outside in awe of the beautiful Mountain View!!! And the amazing stove!!! Kitchen has everything you need!

What a beautiful place to stay for the week! My husband and I loved how scenic the drive up to the cabin was and when we saw those beautiful mountain views on the porch, we just never wanted to leave! The cabin is well stocked--we love to cook so this kitchen was a dream kitchen. It had a 6-gas burner, double oven stove with ample pots and pans, cooking tools, a bender, toaster, 2 coffee makers, grilling tools, etc. The internet was great during the day, but very spotty at night so I recommend bringing DVDs to watch to be on the safe side. We tried to watch our Netflex and Prime shows but the internet was slow at night so it became annoying. The property management team was super nice and attentive. We recommend taking a ride into Old Fort (20 mins away) for lunch and a beer at Hillmans. Great atmosphere and the beers were excellent. Black Mountain is 30 mins away and you will find a big grocery store, a butcher, and tons of shops and restaurants, along with more breweries! We loved our stay here and even got lucky and saw a beautiful black bear in the community on our way to the Falls.

The cabin was just as advertised, very nice and clean, well stocked for cooking, and beautiful views. We loved the area, it was quiet and peaceful and not far from Asheville and the mountains. And greybeard was responsive and helpful. We would definitely come again!

This location provides a beautiful view of the southern valley facing Lake Lure. The cabin is roomy and comfortable and has an excellent kitchen layout. We found everything we needed to enjoy our stay.

The cabin was extremely comfortable. It is the best place, other than a condo at Disney, that we have ever stayed. The view was fantastic! We had everything we needed for cooking. It was great to have so many TV channels so we could listen to music or watch a show while reading or playing games in the evenings.

Cool View Cabin is very comfortable with an unbeatable view of the mountains! The view is breathtaking! The porch allows you to view sunrises and sunsets; which we really enjoyed. The hot tub was another bonus with great views. Fully equipped kitchen with a great updated gas stove. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean. It's about a 30 minute drive to Black Mountain which we also enjoyed exploring. We also enjoyed our hike to beautiful waterfalls! This is a beautiful cabin with beautiful views in a great location!

The great cabin and wonderful view from the deck. We spent a lot of time there. The firepit was a nice feature as well. Every night we grilled and then had a well managed fire. It should be noted that Old Fort is dry except for the brewery which was a fun stop. The drive up Gateway Mountain to the cabin is challenging, but the destination is worth it. We spent a day tubing on the French Broad, rented a pontoon boat on Lake Lure, and visited the Biltmore Estate on very reasonable drives.

Beautiful views with a clean house with great amenities. The hot tube was relaxing as you look out at the mountains. The kitchen was well stocked with all the necessities to make great dinners.

The spectacular view, the spacious cabin and the great hot tub. We also enjoyed the beautiful trail and waterfall on Gateway Mountain.

The cool views of course! Absolutely amazing! The home itself was lovely. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed, the furniture was comfortable and the area was peaceful. We would definitely stay here again.

This cabin was phenomenal! The view was spectacular, and it was in a perfectly quaint location. It took us about 45 minutes to get to downtown Asheville, far enough away to feel completely secluded, but close enough to get a nice dinner and do some sightseeing. We were very impressed with the kitchen. It was the perfect fall weekend getaway for a few friends and I. Greybeard was very quick to respond and extremely thorough. Would absolutely work with them again. Side note - would definitely recommend a 4WD car. If not, best to park at the top of the driveway so as to not get stuck.

Cool View Cabin lives up to its name. I wanted a special place to spend a few precious days with my two young adult sons before the older one jumps into his first, full-time nursing job. We only had a few short days together, but what a meaningful investment it turned out to be. Seeing the peace on their faces when they looked out over that gorgeous "Cool View" was so worth it! We will definitely be back.

We appreciated how nicely appointed the cabin was...we had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was exceptionally stocked, the hot tub was relaxing and the in-house tubs were a bonus. We made visits to surrounding towns and enjoyed the area, including Mt Mitchell. We took a picnic lunch there and enjoyed the almost 20 degree cooler weather up there! The community has a beautiful waterfall and fishing lake.

We had a phenomenal time at Cool View Cabin and North Carolina in general. The house is even better in person - the deck view blew my mind. Check in was a breeze..and I liked that the house was in a gated community. About an hour trip from blue ridge parkway hikes. We enjoyed our days on the parkway hiking all day. Also thumbs up for being pet friendly - this was our pup's first road trip (we drove from Miami) and it was an unforgettable experience to share this home and the mountains with him. The house was also really clean and did not smell of pet odors. We will definitely rent again with greybeard and stay at this home if the opportunity arises. Thanks again.

We had a wonderful week, and really enjoyed the \"cool view\". We also were grateful for the swimming and water falls nearby, as it was very hot when we were there. The house is very comfortable and cozy. The kitchen is very well stocked, which is a good thing, because there are no restaurants nearby. We loved the quiet and privacy, but it was quite a drive just to get to the gate and then to area attractions. Our only suggestion is that there be more furniture on the deck.

The cabin is exactly as shown in the pictures. Beautiful and welcoming. So clean which is what I want in a rental. The view was the icing on the is AMAZING!!! We spent most of our time out on the deck enjoying the mountain air. We cooked most of our meals in the fully stocked kitchen and even used the grill one night. This was a perfect stay and we highly recommend Cool View Cabin. You will not be disappointed. Words cannot do justice for the view.

The view was incredible and so was the cabin. We used the firepit and hot tub, which were both wonderful. The kitchen was mostly stocked, but would have been nice to know a list of what was available to plan for cooking meals. It was great to have linens, towels, and all available. We had a wonderful vacation at the Cool View Cabin. It was our family and another young family - 4 adults and 3 kiddos under the age of 2. Due to the weather, we were home bound for the majority of our time in Asheville. We had an wonderful time taking in the view and enjoying our company. Everything we needed was right in the cabin. The cabin was very clean and equipped with everything. We would definitely plan another trip to Asheville and stay at the Cool View Cabin.

Cabin was very nice and clean. Well equipped. The view was magnificent. The rental company was very helpful. Only thing I did not like was the drive up the mountain and the very steep driveway. If it rains keep your car at the top of the driveway.

The view was amazing. It was a good location in regards to things to do (Asheville, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, etc). The cabin was clean and well maintained. The only down side is the drive from the paved community road down to the cabin was very steep and gravel.

Property is very new and well taken care of, stocked, and clean. Incredible view from the back deck and hot tub below. Spend many hours in that hot tub enjoying the privacy, serenity, view, and of course the very nice hot tub. Recommend you bring food for your breakfasts and dinners and stay \"home\" as there are no decent restaurants nearby (go down to Exit 65/Black Mountain area for that). Besides, the experience here beats any restaurant atmosphere hands down and you don't want to miss a moment as the sun lays down over the valley. Entire cabin and kitchen was spacious and 5 star. Hard to find good nearby hiking (go to Black Mountain area/Montreat or Asheville and plan any lunches out around that outing).

I brought my wife and 4 kids to the cool view cabin this July. I want to start by saying the pictures of the view over the lake do not do justice . We spent countless hours sitting on the deck enjoying the view. The great room is very open and there was more than enough room for the 6 of us. I is an easy, though very steep and curvy drive to Chimey Rock and Lake Lure. We would definately return .

The cabin name is an understatement ~ a truly amazing view.. We had 3 wonderful, sunny days at the cabin the week before Easter. The flowers were in bloom and the sky were clear. While we were vacationing at Cool View the first week of our Christmas break I thought several times what we would miss after we left. The AMAZING VIEW, the wood stove and the hot tub were the top three. We made wonderful memories and only left the cabin one time. The cabin was clean and well maintained. Just beautiful.

FAQs

WHERE IS THIS HOUSE LOCATED?

Black Bear Summit is located in Old Fort. This home is approximately 30 minutes to Black Mountain and Marion, and approximately 45 minutes to Asheville. Click on the location tab above to locate this house on a map.

WHAT IS YOUR REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY?

This property offers a flexible cancellation policy that differs from the standard cancellation policy. The policy for this home is the moderate policy. The terms of the policy are as stated: Bookings canceled at least 30 days before the start of the stay will receive 100% refund. Bookings canceled at least 14 days before the start of the stay will receive 50% refund.

WHAT IS YOUR PET POLICY AND FEE?

Black Bear Summit is specified as "pet friendly" and dogs are allowed. Unfortunately, due to common allergy problems we cannot allow cats. For the privilege of bringing your dog, there is a minimum charge of $100 nonrefundable fee per pet. A maximum of two dogs are allowed unless you have received special permission from the property manager or homeowner. Any damage that may be caused by your pet during your stay will be paid for out of your security deposit or charged to the credit card we have on file. There is a county-wide leash law in place. When taking your dog outside of a gated area, please ensure that they are on a leash.

WHAT ARE CHECK-IN/CHECK OUT TIMES?

Check-in time is 4pm and check out time is 10am. It is important that we adhere to these times, because there is a chance that someone else will be checking out/in before or after you and we need sufficient time to ready the house for the next renter. If you wish to check-in early, there is a $50 early check-in fee that can be added on to your reservation. Early check-in is only available if someone is not checking out on the morning of your arrival.

WHERE DO WE CHECK-IN/PICK UP KEYS?

Black Bear Summit is located in a gated community. You must go to our Old Fort Office at 243 Catawba Ave S to pick up your gate card. Driving directions to our Old Fort Office, along with access instructions will be sent out via email. Once you have picked up your gate card, you can proceed to the house. Please do not rely on GPS. We will provide you with driving directions to the home from our Old Fort Office.

Black Bear Summit has a keyless entry system. You will receive a unique access code within 3 days of your arrival.

WHAT IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY DURING OUR STAY?

If you are having a medical emergency, dial 911 from the phone in your rental home or cell phone.

We hope that your stay in the area will be relaxing and without incident, but should you need to get in touch with Greybeard, we have someone on call 24 hours a day. Just call our office at 828-669-1072 and select option 1, which will forward to the cell phone of the person on call. Please do not hesitate to call us if something needs immediate attention, but if your question or concern can wait, we ask that you call the office during normal office hours.

WHEN IS THE SECURITY DEPOSIT REFUNDED?

Security deposits are returned within 30 days of guest departure.

WILL THERE BE FIREWOOD AT THE HOUSE?

Guests are responsible for purchasing or providing their own firewood. While firewood may be present at the cabin and can be utilized if present, it is not guaranteed. Cutting branches, limbs or trees on the property is strictly prohibited. You can use limbs found on the ground.

Wifi is available at Black Bear Summit. Please note that Greybeard Rentals does not guarantee internet connectivity or speed. Each individual homeowner contracts directly with an internet service provider, and due to a variety of reasons, Greybeard does not guarantee service. Our Black Mountain and Asheville offices have wifi service available if needed.

Cell phone service is not guaranteed. You may check with your service provider to see if service is available.
