Tucked within the Gateway Mountain Nature Preserve that includes 3,000 acres of woodland with hiking trails, a small lake, and a waterfall, this lovely home offers solace and seclusion without compromising on convenience to activities and attractions in the city to ensure the relaxing and adventure-filled mountain getaway you've been longing for. Ideal for a family or a small group of friends, The Lazy Moose is filled with special touches throughout to make this home one you'll want to visit year after year. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by Mickey Moose, aka the perfect place for a group photo before heading home. Once inside, you'll find an open floor plan that includes the main living area, dining room, and kitchen with mountain views visible from every window. Also on this main level is a bedroom with a king bed and a full hall bath with a walk-in shower only. Upstairs, you'll find two bedrooms with a queen bed in each, a full hall bath with a tub/shower combo, and a game room in the loft area that includes a bumper pool table and reading nooks that transform into twin sleeper sofas. Wander out onto the patio in the loft area for a private and cozy space to enjoy even more of those long-range views, or relax on the wraparound deck with a glass of wine to watch the sunset before taking advantage of those clear mountain skies to spot some shooting stars. On those inevitably cold nights, use the beautiful telescope inside beside the dining table to continue stargazing.

Just a short 10-minute drive from the quaint town of Old Fort where you can enjoy a delicious burger and cold beer from Hillman Brewing, and just under 35 minutes from the charming towns of Black Mountain and Marion, you can spend your days exploring downtown Marion before enjoying some nightlife at Mica Town Brewing Company and Spillway Bridge & Co., or you can head over to the "Front Porch of Western North Carolina," Black Mountain, which boasts 2 local breweries (Lookout Brewing and Black Mountain Brewing) along with even more novelty shops, art galleries, parks, and incredible restaurants like Foothills Butcher Bar, Louise's Kitchen, and Black Mountain Bistro. Remember that no trip to Asheville is complete without visiting the Downtown area and the famous Biltmore Estate, and luckily, these two destinations, along with Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, are just a 45-minute drive away. The Lazy Moose offers a private and peaceful place to enjoy the mountains, without the light pollution and commotion that characterizes the big city, along with modern amenities and homey features to ensure a memorable stay you'll dream of returning to when you're away!

Please note: This home is NON-smoking and is NOT pet friendly. There are exterior security cameras. No parking is allowed on roadways or at gate entrances. No RVs, boat trailers, camping trailers, or trailers of any kind are permitted in the Gateway Mountain Community. During the colder winter months, icy and/or snowy road conditions and delayed snow plow operations are possible within the development. From December through March, please come prepared with AWD or 4WD vehicles. We also recommend travel insurance for those staying in the Gateway Mountain development during the winter months.

My family and I had the most wonderful time up on the mountain at the "Moose" as we called it! It was very comfortable and included all necessary amenities. We absolutely loved the views, and there are fabulous rocking chairs with comfortable pillows to enjoy the sights of the mountains! We can't wait to go back!

We had a wonderful and very relaxing stay. The service provided by Greybeard was top notch. The cabin was beautiful. I do wish we would have been told to bring ice and drinking water with us before we made our way up the mountain since the cabin is on well water. It was not drinkable . Other than that, everything was perfect .

Lazy Moose is a well appointed property with views. An outdoor fire pit and grill would have made it superb but the ease of the indoor fireplace was terrific.

The views were spectacular! The telescope was a added bonus. We were able to view homes in the distance during the day and at we looked the stars.

The house is absolutely gorgeous with the most amazing mountain views. Furniture is comfy and attractive. The amenities are topnotch; full kitchen, laundry, stocked pantry, coffee maker, etc. Conveniently located within 40 minutes to Asheville and 25 to Black Mountain. We especially loved the private lake and waterfall within the gated community. We hope to return!

Comfortable beds, a well appointed kitchen and a great living room set up made it very cozy. We didn't get to enjoy the mountain views very much during our stay because of the overcast weather, but when we were able to see a little further out you can tell how picturesque the area is. The gas fireplace was a delight in terms of ease, convenience and ambiance. I noticed in the photos they had a keurig in the kitchen, so I brought a box of k-cups with me. My two tips: plan to arrive before dark because the road up has a lot of curves and it's just easier in daylight - greybeard rentals did call this out to us, and I'm glad they did. 2nd tip, packing / picking up bottled water is a good call if you don't prefer to drink well water - I sometimes find it too mineral for my taste but don't mind it for showering, etc. Great area and it was so nice to be close enough for an easy day trip to Asheville.

FAQs

WHERE IS THIS HOUSE LOCATED?

The Lazy Moose is located in Old Fort. This home is approximately 30 minutes to Black Mountain, 35 minutes to Marion, and approximately 50 minutes to Asheville. Click on the location tab above to locate this house on a map.

WHAT IS YOUR REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY?

If you need to cancel your reservation and the property you had reserved re-rents for the time which you had it reserved, you will be refunded all money you had paid minus an $89 cancellation fee. If you cancel and the property does not re-rent for your reserved dates, you will lose all money you have paid to that point. For this reason, we recommend that you purchase trip insurance. Please call 888-228-8008 before making a reservation if you have questions or concerns.

WHAT IS YOUR PET POLICY AND FEE?

The Lazy Moose is not “pet friendly”. Please be respectful of those owners who, because of allergies or other personal reasons, have chosen not to allow any pets. If housekeeping notes that a pet was present on a non-pet friendly property during your visit, you will be charged a minimum of $600 to clean carpets, upholstered furniture and complete air purification measures. Bringing a pet to a house that is not pet-friendly without owner consent or permission from Greybeard is grounds for termination of the rental agreement without refund. If you must travel with your pet, please contact us for local boarding recommendations. More info about service animals and the ADA is available here.

WHAT ARE CHECK-IN/CHECK OUT TIMES?

Check-in time is 4pm and check out time is 10am. It is important that we adhere to these times, because there is a chance that someone else will be checking out/in before or after you and we need sufficient time to ready the house for the next renter. If you wish to check-in early, there is a $50 early check-in fee that can be added on to your reservation. Early check-in is only available if someone is not checking out on the morning of your arrival.

WHERE DO WE CHECK-IN/PICK UP KEYS?

The Lazy Moose is located in a gated community. You must go to our Old Fort Office at 243 Catawba Ave S to pick up your gate card. Driving directions to our Old Fort Office, along with access instructions will be sent out via email. Once you have picked up your gate card, you can proceed to the house. Please do not rely on GPS. We will provide you with driving directions to The Lazy Moose from our Old Fort Office. 

The Lazy Moose has a keyless entry system. You will receive a unique access code within 3 days of your arrival.

WHAT IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY DURING OUR STAY?

If you are having a medical emergency, dial 911 from the phone in your rental home or cell phone.

We hope that your stay in the area will be relaxing and without incident, but should you need to get in touch with Greybeard, we have someone on call 24 hours a day. Just call our office at 828-669-1072 and select option 1, which will forward to the cell phone of the person on call. Please do not hesitate to call us if something needs immediate attention, but if your question or concern can wait, we ask that you call the office during normal office hours.

WILL THERE BE FIREWOOD AT THE HOUSE? WHEN ARE HOMES WITH GAS LOGS IN OPERATION? 

Firewood is not supplied by Greybeard. Some houses will have a small supply of firewood for renter use; however, it is best to purchase your own small bundle of wood or Duraflame pressed logs at the local grocery store.

Cutting branches, limbs or trees on the property is strictly prohibited. You can use limbs found on the ground. Absolutely NO fires are permitted outside unless the property is fitted with a fire ring/fire pit. You cannot bring your own portable fire pit. 

Gas logs are not in operation May through September due to the warmer summer months. 

IS WIFI SERVICE INCLUDED WITH MY RENTAL RESERVATION? WILL I HAVE CELL PHONE SERVICE AT MY RENTAL?

Wifi is available at The Lazy Moose. Please note that Greybeard Rentals does not guarantee internet connectivity or speed. Each individual homeowner contracts directly with an internet service provider, and due to a variety of reasons, Greybeard does not guarantee service. Our Black Mountain and Asheville offices have wifi service available if needed.

Cell phone service is not guaranteed. You may check with your service provider to see if service is available.
