Sweetwood Lodge overlooks the majestic Blue Ridge Mountain Range. Enjoy the ever-changing mountain view by day and marvel at the brilliant stars against the inky black sky at night. Mount Mitchell, the tallest peak east of the Mississippi River, is directly in view. The property is located in Gateway Mountain, a 3,000-acre hardwood forest and preserve, which offers a peaceful respite from hectic day-to-day life. In addition to the varied and breathtaking vistas, guests within Gateway enjoy unspoiled, woodland surroundings and amenities including hiking trails, a private lake in which you can swim if you'd like, a spectacular and private waterfall park and picnic area, and even a small catch and release trout pond (no license required). We find that time spent on the mountain is always uplifting and restorative and would love for Sweetwood Lodge to be the home base for your getaway.

House Layout:
MAIN FLOOR- Open living room and dining area, artfully appointed, with sliders opening onto the spacious upper deck. The living room has a 70" TV (Direct TV included) and a fireplace with gas logs. There is a bedroom with a queen bed across from the full hall bath with a jacuzzi tub and hand-held shower. A very fully equipped kitchen makes the preparation of anything from a simple snack to a large holiday feast a pleasure for the cook(s) in your group. The primary suite has a King bed and opens onto the screen porch, (which is also accessible from the upper deck), and a full bath features a multi-jet shower. A laundry/mud room with a washer/dryer is also on this level.

LOWER LEVEL- Den with a sectional couch, 50-inch TV with DVD player, game table seating 4-6, and a collection of board games, playing cards, puzzles, and books. An electric Franklin Stove provides both extra warmth and charm to the space. Sliders open onto the lower level deck and a bedroom with a queen bed has a full hall bath (shower only, no tub). The library contains books, travel brochures, local reference materials, and a wireless printer for guest use. A "mini gym" with a spin bike, exercise bands, and free weights are available for use as well.

OUTDOORS- Gas grill off the kitchen door, bistro seating for two on the front porch, two large mountain-facing decks, and a screen porch. The upper deck has a dining table with seating for six adjacent to the wood-burning chimney. The lower deck is furnished with four Adirondack chairs and another bistro set seating two. The screen porch is outfitted to seat four, but can easily accommodate six with extra folding chairs.

Sweetwood Lodge is a true mountain retreat, yet its proximity to the community gate (just 1 mile) on a gently sloping, paved street provides easy access to main roads. It's a comfortable and often very scenic drive to a great variety of active outdoor pursuits, charming mountain towns, small artisanal farms and markets, artist studios/galleries, restaurants, breweries, and historical sights.

Please note: We love animals, but please NO PETS and NO SMOKING in this home. This home is equipped with family-friendly amenities that include a Pack and Play, highchair, children’s tableware and sippy cups, and children’s books & games. 

During the colder winter months, icy and/or snowy road conditions and delayed snow plow operations are possible within the development. From December through March, please come prepared with AWD or 4WD vehicles. We also recommend travel insurance for those staying in the Gateway Mountain development during the winter months. The garage is NOT included in the rental. No parking is allowed on roadways or at gate entrances. No RVs, boat trailers, camping trailers, or trailers of any kind are permitted in the Gateway Mountain Community.

The location is perfect; it is quiet, and supplied with everything. There is plenty of privacy and the family room is big enough with plenty of chairs available. We have chosen this one before and certainly will again.

This has been the most beautiful, clean and organized property we have ever been to. The kitchen is very well equipped, any item we might need was there. The cleaning team does a very good job and the instructions to get to the house are very clear. An advice to future renters, bring your own liquor because this town is a dry town, and it is not even possible to buy beer in the supermarket, this is not something that would restrict me from renting the property again, only that next time, I would come better prepared.

House was so comfortable and perfect for 6 friends vacationing together. Location was convenient to hiking and restaurants. Loved Black Mountain, it is a great town. Would definitely book with Graybeard's again. So professional and helpful.

Beautifully furnished cabin with a great view of the mountains. Property is easy to access within a very private community. Comfortable rooms and a well stocked kitchen if you would like to make meals at home. Plenty of room for the family to spread out on the main floor while still being together or can enjoy the separate living room area downstairs. Will definitely stay at this cabin again and look forward to spending some time on the screened in porch and deck on warmer evenings.

It was clean & very welcoming. The view was wonderful and we were fortunate enough to be there when the fall colors were at their peak. The directions were excellent especially since we arrived after dark. Very well-equipped kitchen and lots of small touches in the cabin to make you feel at home. The only minor issue we had was with the carafe of the coffee pot. It needs to be replaced. As you poured your coffee, it also leaked down the side of the carafe under the black rim so we wasted a good bit of coffee with each pot. We learned to pour our coffee over the sink.

Sweetwood Lodge is spacious, clean, comfortable, and looks just as good, if not better as seen in the the marketing material! Really enjoyed the amazing deck and porch areas. It's nestled in a secluded location with a specular view. The cabin offers intoxicating natural lighting. It is nicely decorated, and boasts a well stocked kitchen. This place does not disappoint!

Location was amazing! The views off the back deck fabulous. The first night, we saw a meteor and several shooting stars. The home is very well equipped and everyone had a great time.

We really enjoyed our stay at Sweetwood Lodge. It was such a spacious home that offered a lot for our family of four. My two girls loved the rooms they stayed in and all the games and movies made available to them. The view and porch was lovely every morning for our breakfast. We loved the gated community and felt very safe our entire time. We will be back, if you want a quiet and peaceful place to stay in the mountains, this place is it!

This cabin is perfect for anyone seeking a secluded/private location with all the amenities one could need or expect. We enjoyed the open living area, well equipped kitchen, vast deck space, and cozy screened porch. Easy access to small towns. We saw wild turkeys, rabbits, squirrels, all kinds of birds, and we were visited two mornings by a black bear and cub (at a safe distance from the house).

The Sweetwood Lodge is a lovely home! Incredible view, ample space to sit an enjoy each other's company, well-stocked kitchen, comfortable beds, great privacy, clean and safe. We will definitely book again.

The house was spotless and fully stocked for all our needs. With all restaurants closed, we were able to cook and have fun with the fully stocked kitchen! Couldn't have asked for a better vacation during these challenging times.

This place was so beautiful and one of the best stocked cabins we have ever rented. It was all neat, organized, and clean! There is a room, bathroom and living space downstairs which made it ideal to have our parents stay with us for a few days with our family upstairs. Great location near black mountain, montreat, and about 35 minute drive to asheville. It was simply perfect! We will definitely be coming back

The cabin was in the perfect location. A quick drive from the Crimson gate made it convenient with great views. Easy drive to Asheville and many other destinations on and off Gateway Mountain. The house was clean and had all the amenities needed for the perfect stay. Sitting in the screened in porch watching a lightning show over the mountains was a real treat. I would highly recommend this property and will stay here again!

WHERE IS THIS HOUSE LOCATED?

Sweetwood Lodge is located in Old Fort. This home is approximately 20 minutes to Black Mountain and Marion, and approximately 40 minutes to Asheville. Click on the location tab above to locate this house on a map.

WHAT IS YOUR REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY?

This property offers a flexible cancellation policy that differs from the standard cancellation policy. The policy for this home is the relaxed policy. The terms of the policy are as stated:  RELAXED - Bookings canceled at least 14 days before the start of the stay will receive 100% refund. Bookings canceled at least 7 days before the start of the stay will receive 50% refund.  

WHAT IS YOUR PET POLICY AND FEE?

Sweetwood Lodge is not “pet friendly”. Please be respectful of those owners who, because of allergies or other personal reasons, have chosen not to allow any pets. If housekeeping notes that a pet was present on a non-pet friendly property during your visit, you will be charged a minimum of $600 to clean carpets, upholstered furniture and complete air purification measures. Bringing a pet to a house that is not pet-friendly without owner consent or permission from Greybeard is grounds for termination of the rental agreement without refund. If you must travel with your pet, please contact us for local boarding recommendations. More info about service animals and the ADA is available here.

WHAT ARE CHECK-IN/CHECK OUT TIMES?

Check-in time is 4pm and check out time is 10am. It is important that we adhere to these times, because there is a chance that someone else will be checking out/in before or after you and we need sufficient time to ready the house for the next renter. If you wish to check-in early, there is a $50 early check-in fee that can be added on to your reservation. Early check-in is only available if someone is not checking out on the morning of your arrival.

WHERE DO WE CHECK-IN/PICK UP KEYS?

Sweetwood Lodge is located in a gated community. You must go to our Old Fort Office at 243 Catawba Ave S to pick up your gate card. Driving directions to our Old Fort Office, along with access instructions will be sent out via email. Once you have picked up your gate card, you can proceed to the house. Please do not rely on GPS. We will provide you with driving directions to Sweetwood Lodge from our Old Fort Office. 

Sweetwood Lodge has a keyless entry system. You will receive a unique access code within 3 days of your arrival.

WHAT IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY DURING OUR STAY?

If you are having a medical emergency, dial 911 from the phone in your rental home or cell phone.

We hope that your stay in the area will be relaxing and without incident, but should you need to get in touch with Greybeard, we have someone on call 24 hours a day. Just call our office at 828-669-1072 and select option 1, which will forward to the cell phone of the person on call. Please do not hesitate to call us if something needs immediate attention, but if your question or concern can wait, we ask that you call the office during normal office hours.

WILL THERE BE FIREWOOD AT THE HOUSE? WHEN ARE HOMES WITH GAS LOGS IN OPERATION?

Sweetwood Lodge has a gas logs fireplace and outdoor chimenea for guests to use. Gas logs are not in operation May through September due to the warmer summer months. 

Firewood is not supplied by Greybeard. Some houses will have a small supply of firewood for renter use; however, it is best to purchase your own small bundle of wood or Duraflame pressed logs at the local grocery store. Cutting branches, limbs or trees on the property is strictly prohibited. You can use limbs found on the ground. 

IS WIFI SERVICE INCLUDED WITH MY RENTAL RESERVATION? WILL I HAVE CELL PHONE SERVICE AT MY RENTAL?

Wifi is available at Sweetwood Lodge. Please note that Greybeard Rentals does not guarantee internet connectivity or speed. Each individual homeowner contracts directly with an internet service provider, and due to a variety of reasons, Greybeard does not guarantee service.
