Big Bear Cabin is an immaculate mountain home located in Gateway Mountain's 3,000-acre nature preserve. Enjoy access to lush wooded forests, gorgeous waterfalls, and stunning mountaintop views. The community also has two small lakes and a trout pond for catch-and-release fishing (no license required). The cabin is a mere 1-mile hike to the private community waterfall and is just up the hill from the swimming area and fishing pond by Lake George.

Please note: This home is NOT pet-friendly. There are 2 ring flood light exterior cameras (1 at the front deck and 1 at the back porch above the door). Firewood is not provided. 4WD is not required the majority of the year but is strongly recommended during the colder winter months when icy and/or snowy road conditions are present. We also recommend travel insurance for those staying in the Gateway Mountain development during the winter months. No parking is allowed on roadways or at gate entrances. No RVs, boat trailers, camping trailers, or trailers of any kind are permitted in the Gateway Mountain Community.

This house was absolutely wonderful! We enjoyed the hot tub, fireplace, and game room. The trails were so close to the house and we loved waterfall. The only feedback we have is the dishwasher didn’t work very well and the pool rack was broken. Besides that, our stay was perfect. Thank you!

Big Bear Cabin-Big Mountain Views

What a beautiful cabin! It was very clean and spacious, and the views of the mountains were spectacular. We could sit on the deck and watch the clouds roll in and out. While it is quite a drive up the mountain, the view once there is amazing. We arrived late in the afternoon on a Sunday, so we needed to go to the next town over to get groceries as the local Piggly Wiggly was closed. I would recommend getting everything you need prior to the drive to the cabin. We spent the first day exploring the trail close to the cabin, which had a wonderful waterfall where the boys played. It was such a treat to have that basically in the "backyard." We did that hike twice! Every evening after our hikes, we enjoyed the beautiful views on the deck while using the hot tub. The game room was fantastic, with a variety of games to play, including pool, pop-a-shot, air hockey, ping pong, foosball, and darts. The boys used the fishing poles and fished one evening in the little lake that is just a quick walk away. This cabin was amazing, and Greybeard was wonderful to work with. When the code to get in did not work, they were easy to get in touch with and resolved the problem quickly. We are missing the cabin already.

Our stay was excellent! The accommodation was more than expected. The view was perfect and we loved the peace and quiet and the seclusion. While the inside of the house was immaculate, the exterior needed some attention. It was obvious that no a lot of time was spent with cleaning or attending to the outside of the property. In spite of that, we enjoyed the fire pit, bbq grill and hot tub. We will certainly recommend this to a friend.

Directions for check-in were simple and convenient. This house was better than advertised! It was very clean when we arrived and had a warm and welcoming vibe. The upstairs loft would've been nice if I decided to do some work but I chose not to! Waterfall hike without having to drive anywhere was a nice bonus! We're planning a return trip to stay longer soon. A couple of things that our family would've like to have had would be TVs in the 2 Master Bedrooms and a bigger outdoor fire pit. That won't stop us from returning or trying another cabin.

This cabin is the perfect Blue Ridge Mountain retreat! Comfortable, spacious bedrooms, common rooms with incredible views and a game room for hours of fun if you''re not sitting on the speck enjoying the astonishing view! The kitchen, large dining room table and georgeous fireplace filled our evening s with special family memories! Thank you Big Bear and all those who had a hand in making our stay a fantastic one! Especially the housekeeping team, it was spotless!

Great mountainview house

This was a great house for our mountain stay. We didn't take advantage of the surroundings like most as we used it as a base house to Asheville and Bryson City. Everything was comfy and warm (despite the temps outside). Tho it wasn't required to have AWD or 4WD this time of year (and we didn't have), the directions take you down gravel roads and it was a little terrifying in some spots. However, we finally found a way using only paved roads. The house is well appointed, totally worth it for two king en suites. Game room was awesome too. Room for plenty of people!

Going up the mountain at first because if you are not familiar with it, you will get lost, take some time to get to the house
As soon as I saw the beautiful scenery and the house we are about to move into, all fatigue and restlessness are gone
Perfect room, convenient kitchen equipment, play room for children to enjoy, everything is so perfect

WHERE IS THIS HOUSE LOCATED?

Big Bear Cabin is located within the private Gateway Mountain Community in Old Fort. This home is approximately a 20-minute drive to downtown Old Fort, a 30-minute drive to Black Mountain, a 35-minute drive to Marion, and a 45-minute drive to Asheville. Click on the location tab above to locate this house on a map.

WHAT IS YOUR REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY?

If you need to cancel your reservation and the property you had reserved re-rents for the time which you had it reserved, you will be refunded all money you had paid minus an $89 cancellation fee. If you cancel and the property does not re-rent for your reserved dates, you will lose all money you have paid to that point. For this reason, we recommend that you purchase trip insurance. Please call 888-228-8008 before making a reservation if you have questions or concerns.

WHAT IS YOUR PET POLICY AND FEE?

Big Bear Cabin is not “pet friendly.” Please be respectful of those owners who, because of allergies or other personal reasons, have chosen not to allow any pets. If housekeeping notes that a pet was present on a non-pet friendly property during your visit, you will be charged a minimum of $600 to clean carpets, upholstered furniture and complete air purification measures. Bringing a pet to a house that is not pet-friendly without owner consent or permission from Greybeard is grounds for termination of the rental agreement without refund. If you must travel with your pet, please contact us for local boarding recommendations. More info about service animals and the ADA is available here.

WHAT ARE CHECK-IN/CHECK OUT TIMES?

Check-in time is 4pm and check out time is 10am. It is important that we adhere to these times, because there is a chance that someone else will be checking out/in before or after you and we need sufficient time to ready the house for the next renter. If you wish to check-in early, there is a $50 early check-in fee that can be added on to your reservation. Early check-in is only available if someone is not checking out on the morning of your arrival.

WHERE DO WE CHECK-IN/PICK UP KEYS?

Big Bear Cabin is located in a gated community. You must go to our Old Fort Office at 243 Catawba Ave S to pick up your gate card. Driving directions to our Old Fort Office, along with access instructions will be sent out via email. Once you have picked up your gate card, you can proceed to the house. Please do not rely on GPS. We will provide you with driving directions to the home from our Old Fort Office. You will receive check-in instructions prior to your arrival with key access information.

WHAT IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY DURING OUR STAY?

If you are having a medical emergency, dial 911 from the phone in your rental home or cell phone.

We hope that your stay in the area will be relaxing and without incident, but should you need to get in touch with Greybeard, we have someone on call 24 hours a day. Just call our office at 828-669-1072 and select option 1, which will forward to the cell phone of the person on call. Please do not hesitate to call us if something needs immediate attention, but if your question or concern can wait, we ask that you call the office during normal office hours.

WHEN IS THE SECURITY DEPOSIT REFUNDED?

Security deposits are returned within 30 days of guest departure.

WILL THERE BE FIREWOOD PROVIDED?

Big Bear Cabin has an indoor wood-burning fire pit and an outdoor fire pit. While firewood is not supplied by Greybeard, some houses may have a small leftover supply of firewood for renter use. However, we strongly recommend purchasing your own small bundle of wood or Duraflame pressed logs at the local grocery store. Cutting branches, limbs or trees on the property is strictly prohibited, but you can use limbs found on the ground. 

IS WIFI SERVICE INCLUDED WITH MY RENTAL RESERVATION? WILL I HAVE CELL PHONE SERVICE AT MY RENTAL?

Wifi is available at Big Bear Cabin. Please note that Greybeard Rentals does not guarantee internet connectivity or speed. Each individual homeowner contracts directly with an internet service provider, and due to a variety of reasons, Greybeard does not guarantee service. Our Black Mountain and Asheville offices have wifi service available if needed.

Cell phone service is not guaranteed. You may check with your service provider to see if service is available.
