Snagging the title as one of the longest annual traditions in Asheville (since 1928), The Mountain Dance and Folk Festival is a true display of the Asheville area's cultural heritage. The event takes place every first weekend in August and is comprised of a host of mountain fiddlers, dulcimer sweepers, dancers, and balladeers and is sponsored by the Folk Heritage Committee.
Bascom Lamar Lunsford founded the festival to help people share and understand the "beauty and dignity of Southern Appalachian music and dance traditions" that have been passed down in WNC culture.
The event's main stage is at Lipinsky Hall on the UNC-Asheville campus from August 4-6, and the show is from 6:30-9:30 PM each night. Tickets range from $12-$60.
